Frequently Asked Questions: PRINCE2® Foundation

1. What is PRINCE2 Foundation?

PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is a structured project management methodology. The Foundation level is the first of two certifications. It confirms you know the principles and terminology of the method and can act as an informed member of a project management team.

2. Are there any prerequisites for the exam?

No. There are no formal prerequisites for the Foundation level. It is open to anyone interested in project management, from entry-level professionals to experienced managers looking for a structured framework.

3. What is the exam format?

The Foundation exam is designed to test your knowledge and recall of the methodology:

  • Type: Multiple-choice questions.

  • Total Questions: 60.

  • Duration: 60 minutes.

  • Passing Score: 55% (33 out of 60 correct answers).

  • Book Status: Closed book.

4. How long is the certification valid?

The PRINCE2 Foundation certification remains valid for three years. To maintain your status, you can either retake the exam before the expiry date or maintain a professional membership through PeopleCert (the official certifying body).

5. What is the difference between Foundation and Practitioner?

  • Foundation: Focuses on terminology, concepts, and the structure of the method (the "What" and "Why").

  • Practitioner: Focuses on the application of the method to real-world project scenarios (the "How"). You must pass Foundation before you can sit for the Practitioner exam.

6. Is PRINCE2 better than PMP?

Neither is "better"; they are complementary.

  • PRINCE2 is a methodology providing a step-by-step process for managing projects.

  • PMP (Project Management Professional) is based on a Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), focusing on the skills and competencies of a Project Manager. Many professionals choose to hold both to enhance their global employability.

7. Who is this course for?

  • Aspiring and current Project Managers.

  • Team Leads and Project Coordinators.

  • Project Board members and stakeholders.

  • Support staff working within a PRINCE2 environment.
